Heritage Ottawa Annual General Meeting
Thank you to our members who attended this year's Annual General Meeting held on June 7, 2022 at 7:00 pm via ZOOM.
And thank you to our guest speaker, Stephen Jarrett, for his excellent presentation: BARRACK HILL: ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSIGHTS FROM THE CENTRE BLOCK REHABILITATION PROJECT, now available for viewing on our YouTube channel until July 16, 2022.
Prior to the construction of the Parliament buildings from 1859 to 1866, Parliament Hill was known as Barrack Hill. Barrack Hill housed British soldiers from 1827 to 1858 to defend the entrance of the Rideau Canal. In advance of the necessary rehabilitation of the Centre Block, archaeological investigations and excavations uncovered substantial evidence of the Barrack Hill period including the Guard House, Eastern Barracks, a cook house, the powder magazine, as well as numerous other features.
The presentation provides an overview of the history of Barrack Hill and the fascinating archaeological finds associated with it.
Stephen Jarrett is an Archaeologist with WSP Canada Inc in Ottawa. For the last four years Stephen has led the archaeological program associated with the Centre Block Rehabilitation Project. Stephen holds an MA in Heritage Conservation from Carleton University and a BA in Archaeology from Trent University. He is licensed under the Ontario Heritage Act to conduct all aspects of archaeological work in the province.
